QRP Sound Files

A few years ago I received an email from a station I worked in Europe. I had been using my Norcal 40A and its 3 watts into a dipole. Our QSO consisted of me answering questions about this then-new rig. Little did I know that the QSO was being recorded as a wav file. Upon opening the email and playing the file, the thought kept running running through my head that "this is what I sounded like in Europe!"

There was absolutely no technical knowledge to be gained, no conclusions about propogation, etc. But it sure was fun to see how the signal from my little homebrew rig sounded after traveling the miles across the nighttime Atlantic and arriving in a distant receiver.

For those of you who may also be so easily entertained, I will post captured sound files from the various QRP events here from time to time.

1 Watt From Scotland

George GM3OXX is a well-known QRP homebrewer on both sides of the Pond. I had the pleasure of working him today on 20 meters. He was using a 1-watt homebrew transceiver and, although band conditions weren't great, his signal sounded fantastic into my New York work QTH where I only have a dipole. Not bad for one watt at the bottom of the solar cycle! Thanks for the FB QSO, George.

30 Nov 2006 - QRP ARCI Topband Sprint

This was a fun little contest centered around 1810 kHz. I participated for 3 1/2 hours and was surprised at the strength of some of the signals, particularly W3LR whose output power was only 1 watt. During lulls in the QRP activity, I dialed up the power to 100 watts and snagged a few new countries on Topband, the best being ES1QD in Estonia.

Here are the sound files of the folks I worked (I think I missed 3 of you - sorry):

WAV files of the stations I worked as received 45km north of New York City on my FT-840 and inverted L (up 50 feet & over 85 feet) with 20 radials.

G3ROO on 80 Meters

On 2 Feb 2006, Ian G3ROO was calling Hans W1/G0UPL on 80m at 2230Z (5:30PM local time in US). This was 10 minutes after local sunset as Hans and I received Ian on my Index Labs QRP+ and G5RV strung between two 20m towers. Our QTH was on the NY/CT border (340k wav file).
