Gel Cells
This graph shows the 300 mAh discharge characteristics
of a 2900 mAh gel cell. This battery, from an Elecraft K2, weighs
34 ounces and costs $28. A typical rating of 300-400 charge/recharge
cycles and inexpensive chargers means a cost per charge price
of roughly $00.15.

This battery was only discharged down
to 11.4V - anything less than that risks damage to one
or more of the cells.
A gel cell's weight & bulk make it impractical for
backpacking or any other type of "lightweight hiking"
endeavor. But for Field Day or emergency stand-by power,
this type of battery is probably te best choice given
its length of service life and flat discharge curve.
