Masa's (JJ1IZW) highly modified 40m SST

I have two SSTs – one for 30m and one for 40m. I love the robust little rigs but have always been disappointed in their frequency coverage. Using two varactors, I can operate 7038-7046 kHz on the 40m SST. A web search turned up this “Super” SST from Masa JJ1IZW.

The language barrier has limited our emails to only the most basic exchange of information. Here is Masa’s description of the rig’s mods that have to do with its broadband coverage of 7001-7028 kHz:

My sst40 uses a “PVC” which is “20 – 170pF”.

(Not using varactor diodes).

—————

Notice:

Due to using PVC, it become no-linear.

Small radio dial is NG.

So I changed to a large diameter dial (Knob).

RFC3 is changed and it is from about 10 to 15μH.

You must not use than 15uH or it may have QRH or no-oscillation.

and

Using same freq “Twin-X’tal”=Super VXO.

And

7.001-7.028=using Twin 11.0592Mhz X’tal.(Super VXO)

7.101-7.124=using One 11.155Mhz X’tal.(Normal VXO)

I am using a swich for 11.0592 and 11.159 xtal.

This is my blog url for sst40:

Some interesting YouTube videos are embedded into the above blog pages.

I was interested in this because I’ve been pondering lately if I can somehow incorporate an Si570-based VFO into my SST to achieve similar coverage. Used primarily by the SoftRock crowd, this chip is best described as a programmable crystal. Hans G0UPL put one to use as a 30m beacon. Lots of possibilities.
