Well that was fun but I’ll still be hearing ole Sam Morse’s code in my sleep and all day at work tomorrow, I’m sure.

I operated for about 20 hours, all search and pounce concentrating in parts on participating in pile-ups (to test various techniques and to get the country) and just tuning around looking for new band-countries. Antenna was a single 80m dipole (used on all bands) up 70 feet; power was 100 watts.

Chasing Bonnie & Clyde: an eye-witness account

Mr. Clarence Faulk

I spent a few hours yesterday in the company of Clarence Faulk at his home in Ruston, Lousiana. Mr. Faulk is 101 years old and is blessed with a mind and wit that are both tack-sharp. He is a gifted storyteller with an easy-going sense of humor and is the epitome of a Southern Gentleman. To say that the conversation was interesting would be a vast understatement.

He was the founder and owner of the town’s newspaper, The Ruston Daily Leader, beginning in 1930 and has a newspaperman’s mind and eye for detail. These qualities served him well in May of ’34 when Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were finally killed in nearby Gibsland.

A DX experiment to try

A few minutes ago, a quick check of the DX cluster showed numerous spots for 9G5TT (Ghana) on 30 meters. I tuned to his freq and heard him loud and clear on 10.118 MHz. Booming in. A few kilohertz up was a large pile-up spreading 3 kHz and consisting of both NA and European stations.

I listened for several calls, tuning to those he worked and then chimed in with a few calls of my own. On the third call, he responded and I got him in the log.
