Why not – after all, Transnistria and Kosovo are striving for independent status and have recently been put on the air with callsigns of dubious legality meant to call attention to their desires.
Vlad UA4WHX is currently operating as T10VB from Transnistria – a so called breakaway territory that borders Moldova. On a popular DX forum, Vlad states that Transnistria has about as much in common with Moldova as North Korea does with South Korea.
I suppose this is meant to imply that they deserve separate entity status from Moldova since they are “culturally different”. The operation from Kosovo a few months ago was for much the same reason.
Hmmm…turns out that there are a lot of breakaway territories scattered around the world. You can see them all here. Even tiny Vermont has one. But perhaps the most valid justification for one here in the US comes from a group calling itself the Lakota Freedom Delegation. With various American Indian tribes already enjoying protected status in some regards, they just might be on to something.
If they get their way, their nation would be called the Republic of Lakota.
Maybe some radio-savvy PR-types in their tribal leadership could petition a Swedish breakaway territory (Sapmi) to grant them an ITU exemption for the callsign SI0UX and host their own publicity-generating DXpedition.
