DXing’s obsession emulated in “The Big Year”

tbyI watched “The Big Year” a couple of nights ago and can’t imagine a DXer watching this movie and not seeing the parallels between DXing and birdwatching.

The movie is about three guys who compete with each other to see who can see the highest number of bird species in a single year.

You know – like the DX Marathon but with Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson.

The movie captures the obsession some have for the hobby (both hobbies) and the variety of reactions their obsession can have on family members – some are supportive (Martin’s wife), some think it’s silly (Black’s father) and Wilson’s wife leaves him over it.

For all intents and purposes “The Big Year” is about DXing and/or contesting with birds being substituted for DX entities, humorously told but with a lesson embedded within.

Book the movie based on is quite good.
There is a fellow at our local (one of the last) audio shops who reminds me of Jack Black’s character in the John Cusack film “High Fidelity”.
I cannot STAND the guy and will not let him even talk to me when I go in to look at a potential purchase.

I like Jack Black in small doses – don’t think I’d want to work with someone like him though…
