Songs to avoid while winding toroids…

The ILER-20 nears completion…

If an accurate turn count is important to you when winding toroidal inductors and transformers, the following songs are best avoided while winding them:

  • Gimme Three Steps – Lynyrd Skynyrd
  • Knock Three Times – Tony Orlando
  • 99 – Toto
  • Seven Bridges Road – Eagles
  • Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover – Paul Simon
  • One – U2
  • Eight Miles High – The Byrds
  • 9 to 5 – Dolly Parton
  • 5:15am – Mark Knopfler
  • Once, Twice, Three Times a Lady – Commodores

However, the following are perfect for radio-building background music:

I love my ILER 20 and 40, I’m sure you like yours.

I’m looking forward to finishing it. What mic are you using?

I’m using a CB type mic that I built from an old mic housing and and a Ebay element, I consistently get great audio reports. I have a studio mic I hook up once in a while also, it gets rave reviews. You wont be happy with a electret mic, too wide of frequency response, they sound garbled. Check my QRZ page to see how mine finished up.

Nothing currently there regarding the mic – but a good-looking build of the ILER.

Many photos with mics are here:

I’ll probably just use the mic from my old FT840 since many of that type are pictured.

Never wound a toroid yet. But will remember the music ;-)

Your ham radio career will not be complete until you wind a toroid and build a kit, Bas – I may be recommending an ILER for you in a few days…!

Years ago, I was in an argument about whether Chicago’s 25 or 6 to 4 was about drugs or songwriting. Thank you for resolving that longstanding mystery — it’s about winding transformers.

Yes, it was about a trifilar winding on a toroid. How could a ham have interpreted it any differently? ;-)
