The intensity of the 20m pile-up for 1A0C led me to believe that SMOM was perhaps in the top 20 or so of most-needed entities. Upon looking it up I was surprised to see that it’s much further down on the list at 79.
There have been much smaller pile-ups for much rarer entities – Malpelo and Pitcairn to name two. Even four days in, they were tamer.
With only four days total for this DXpedition, the mad rush was on with no opportunity to pace oneself for later, thus accounting for the maelstrom.
The op handled the pile-up expertly, running like a banshee at 31-33 wpm with callers of all skill levels spread out over 12 kHz. Quite the party…..and me without a sub-rx – how embarrassing.
I know very little about the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta (its full name) and plan to do a bit of reading on the subject. Seems it’s quite a unique entity.

Last night on 20m’s I was trying to give 1A0C a go but without success. The pileup was large and very wide across the band and then there were some that did not understand about split they transmitted overtop of 1AOC. I do have the sub RX and the P3 but was not able to find an open spot for my 5 watts. Maybe I will let the excitement die down and try anothter time.
Hello Mike – Unfortunately, the DXpedition ends today. If nothing else, the intensity of the activity shows that a full-fledged DXpedition would certainly be warranted by whoever could undertake such an operation. A large part of that may depend on how much money is raised for the charitable aspect of the current DXpedition.
