June starts off promising

By , June 1, 2012

The solar report from the ARRL this morning mentioned a significant decline over last week but the 17m band evidently didn’t get that news.

Conditions right now (10pm local) on that band are a bit unusual – rather than an S5 background noise, there’s almost no noise whatsoever.

It almost sounds like a receiver problem…but tuning across the band results in one DX station after another, just popping into audibility.

Two new band-countries with no associated pile-ups – Somalia and Azerbaijan on 17 meters.

Others east of Europe are fairly loud as well though no Europeans are being heard. Strange conditions indeed, keeping the hobby interesting decade after decade.

Good morning John, I have found 17m’s to be about the best right now at dusk and during the evening. I will have to get on this evening and give it a go!! Congrats on the new band counties.

Mike you seem to be doing some amazing things with that indoor antenna. How about a write-up on your blog summarizing your results with it so far…I’m sure others in the same situation would find it inspiring.

John that is a great idea as for my attic dipole setup and the QRP signal to be honest I just thought the results were “normal”. This would give me a chance to compile results that may even shock me. So it’s in the works I have to drive Julie to a church and reception for a wedding shoot she is doing next weekend. This will give me something to toss around in my mind as I drive into Toronto!!
