Mountain-Top Rig de KD1JV

By , February 23, 2012

Pending permission to use one of his photos, here is a text-only description of a new kit about to be available from designer extraordinaire, Steve Weber KD1JV:

Steve  is currently prototyping a new rig which will be named either the MTR (Mountain-Top Rig) or ATS-3C.

It fits into an Altoids tin and differs from versions prior to the ATS-3B in that it offers only 2 bands.

The current ATS-4 offers 4 bands without the need of plug-in modules but is too large to fit in an Altoids tin. It (as the new kit will) makes band changes via 3 DPDT slide switches.

So the MTR will offer 2 bands without the need to change band modules. So far it looks as if 20/40 will be the stock bands with 30 and 80 meters being offered as substituted options.

From both an operational and antenna stand-point, 20/40 meters make a good choice since both bands can utilize a single antenna in the form of something similar to Par’s EF-10/20/40.

Additionally it will have an LED display.

Right around $100 seems to be the target price.

  2. For around $100, I think it’s going to be a no-brainer for a lot of people. Can’t wait to see what it looks like. Thanks for the heads-up John.
